Tribune Review of Greensburg

Sports Journalist and Athletics Score Inputter

In 2022, I joined the Tribune Review in Greensburg, PA to help input scores from high school athletic events throughout the week such as soccer, football, and tennis. During my time with the Tribune Review, I had the opportunity to write senior spotlights for outstanding seniors throughout the year and each were published on the Trib HSSN website and in the Tribune Review print newspaper weekly.

My experience

My experience with the Tribune Review was incredible to say the least. While I did get to work in the Greensburg office Friday nights helping put scores into the system from local football games, I also wrote for the paper and Trib HSSN website. Through my experience, I further developed my interpersonal skills as I had to interview coaches, players, and athletic directors each week, further enhance my writing skills as sports journalism requires a different type of writing, and kept a strict deadline for myself to enter spotlights for the paper.

I will never forget the first time I saw my name as a writer in the paper. For me, that was a moment in my professional career path that made it all worth it and served as a stepping stone for my future plans to hopefully enter the sports industry that will require me to proficiently write. I cannot thank the Tribune Review staff and my supervisor enough for the opportunity to write and learn weekly for a year.

Samples of Published Spotlights

In the winter, I had the opportunity to work with St. Joseph's outstanding senior, Ethan Zale. Zale, a 2023 graduate, played basketball for St. Joe's and led the team to a great season start of 4-2.

On December 16th, the day of the interview, Zale scored 27 points, a career-high for the young man.  Besides basketball, he was also involved with the St. Joe's soccer team and leadership team.

In the spring, I had the opportunity to work with Apollo Ridge standout, Jessica Ross. Ross, a 2023 graduate, participated in Track and Field during her time at Apollo Ridge with her main event being pole vault.

In April, she participated in the TSTCA Outdoor Championships where she had great success, ranking in the higher placements and vaulting as high as 10 feet in the air.

In the fall, I had the opportunity to work with Deer Lake's outstanding senior, Mason Metzler. Metzler, a 2023 graduate, played soccer and served as their captain during that season. Deer Lakes was the team to beat that season as in October, they had a record of 6-0 in their section.

Metzler was also a member of the 2020 Deer Lakes WPIAL Soccer Championship team and was a member of the volleyball team.
